Oliver is listed as dying of wounds on 16th September 1917, most likely at the 53rd Casualty Clearing Station which is the only CCS that was at Bailleau in Sept 1917 from the list given by the CWGC record above. The War diary indicates that the 2nd Battalion was not involved in any major actions during the whole of September and spent their time either in trenches or on working parties in the Kemmel area. Most, if not all, of the casualties were caused by enemy shellfire. It records other ranks being wounded on the 4th; 6th; 7th; 8th; 9th and 11th Sept, during which time things were so quiet that men were being allowed to go on leave back to the UK. |
