Circumstances of Death

George is listed as dying of wounds on 10th June 1915 at the 10th Stationary Hospital at St. Omer. We have not been able to established the exact place or day that George was wounded. In early June the Battalion were in billets and trenches near Le Casan.

Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 25th April 1915. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 24th to 26th April are transcribed below

24th April 1915 - Locre: Left Locre at 7am & marched to Oudgrdon? and went into billets in huts about 12 noon. Brigade came up & orders were received to advance at 4pm via Vlamertinghe & halted outside Ypres from 8pm to 12mn. Started to rain. Ypres was heavily shelling and on fire.

25th April 1915 - Vielje: Left Ypres at 12mn for Vielje where orders were received for the attack. The Brigade attacked at 4.30am. We attacked the wood on the left of the line with 7th A&S Highlanders in support. The Seaforth Highlanders, R Irish Fus and R Dublin Fus attacked on our right on St. Julien. Owing to the German Trenches being insufficiently shelled and supports unable to come up the line retired at about 7am to trenches near the farm and consolidated our position. Our casualties were very heavy 17 officers and 500 other ranks killed, wounded and missing.

26th April 1915 - Vielje: Heavy gunfire all day. About 2.30pm the Northumberland Division attacked St. Julien without success. We opened supporting fire from our trenches. The Lahore Division attacked on our left but gained very little ground being stopped by gas.

Circumstances of Death

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 6 Aug 1916 during the Battle of the Somme. The brief 13th Battalion war diary entries for the period 3rd to 7th August are transcribed below:

3rd August: Moved to front line approx S.3.d.0.4 to S.3.d.9½.½ with supporting trenches in rear. The trenches were for the most part shallow and contained many unburied dead.

4th August: Heavy bombardment during the night. 101st Bde on our left attacked with four companies a position of the intermediate line at 1.10am & secured the left of their objective. They had to withdraw owing to difficulty of communications

5th August: Nothing to report

6th August: Were relieved at 5am by 10 RF [10Bn Royal Fusiliers] and move to our old line in Mametz Wood. Enemy shelling very active from about midnight until 6am on Mametx Wood and on the valleys S & W.

7th August: Nothing to report.

8th August: Artillery both sides fairly active.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

At the end of the first day of the German Spring Offensive - 21st March 1918 - the 5th Hussars were forced to dismount into the lines near Bihecourt. At 10am the following day were ordered to fall back to the Green Line at Bernes and during the withdrawal A Squadron was very nearly surrounded but escaped under heavy shellfire. Once the battalion reached Bernes they marched to Mons-en-Chausee where they met with their horses and then rode to Athies. From there they took up a position at Prusle Cross Roads to cover the retreating infantry crossing the Somme at St. Christ and they remained there overnight. It is thought that Cyril was killed during the shelling of A Squadron.
