Originally enlisted in August 1914 but was rejected because of a Hammer Toe.

Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

26 May 1918 - "The battalion moved from Arqueves to Acheux Wood and came under control of  G.O.C 12th Division. The 50th Infantry Brigade relieved the 35th Brigade in the left sector. The Battalion moved up from Acheux Wood at 10p.m. [to Auchenvillers] and relieved the 10th Essex Regiment in the Right Sub Sector. Relief completed by 2 a.m’.
 
27 May 1918 - Auchenvillers
‘The Battalion was in the line. Day quiet. Usual Artillery fire’.
 
A newspaper report at the time stated that William was one of three men seeking shelter in a dug out when they were hit by shell on the 27th May.
