Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)
Claude was killed during an attack on Turkish lines at Beit Aiesa. The attack was repulsed by very heavy shellfire from the Turkish lines. The war diary for the day is transcribed below:'At 7am A&B Coys went forward in the attack from A1, A2 & A3 captured Turkish trenches. HQ & C & D Coys very heavily shelled. The attack was not pushed home. Casualties 1 officer [Albert] and 8 other ranks killed; 1 officer and 56 other ranks wounded and 4 missing'.
