Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)           

Ernest is listed as dying of wounds on 22 Aug 1916 in Rouen, the home of numerous Military Hospitals. His service record indicates that he was wounded 5 days prior on 17 Aug 1916. The war diary for 17 Aug 1916 is transcribed below, there is, however, no mention of casualties which is consistent with other days in the diary.

Aug - Carlton Trench - N of Delville Wood - 17 Thurs: Bombardment from 8.0am to 6.0pm by all guns. 8th Bn relieved 7th Bn which began at 9pm - not finished until 2.00am. 8th Bn, less B&C Coys who remain in Savoy & Carlton trench as Bde Reserve,returns to Pommiers Redoubt. Bn HQ also returned to Pommiers Redoubt. END
