Henry is listed as being killed on 11 Sep 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary does not mention any casualties for the three day period 10th to 12th Sept but a report in the Stratford Herald states he was killed by the premature explosion of a trench mortar charge. Both sources are transcribed below. War DiaryArleux Loop 10/9/1918: Holding the line, very wet and muddy Arleux Loop 11/9/1918: Lieut W.L. Clegg reported missing 27/5/1918 officially accepted as Prisoner of War. 14864 Pte G. Rockley reported missing 25/3/1918 escaped from territory occupied by enemy, arrived in UK 22/8/1918. Arleux Loop 12/9/1918: Wet and muddy. Holding the line Newspaper ReportThe Stratford-upon-Avon Herald - Friday October 4th 1918 Quinton. Private Henry Hughes, whose widowed mother, Mrs. D Hughes resides at Admington, in the Parish of Quinton was killed in action by the premature bursting of the charge of a trench mortar gun. He was 29 years of age and it worthy of note that the day he died, September 11th, was the exact anniversary of the day he joined up, four years ago. He was won special distinction for bravery and good service in the Irish Brigade and at the conclusion of a letter of sympathy and appreciation to his mother his officer writes:- "He was respected by all, both officers and men"; another writes "We are all very sad at losing him" |
