Richard is listed as dying of wounds on 6 Aug 1917. His Register of Effects record states that he died "in the field". He was buried at Mendinghem Cemetery which was used by 4 Casualty Clearing Stations. The 106th Brigade war diary indicates that Richard was most likely wounded in the late evening of 5 Aug 1917 and the period 2nd to 6th of August is transcribed below along with an obituary from the Leamington Spa Courier War Diary2nd August 1917: Batteries firing at slow rate on S.O.S at request of Infantry until 5.30am. Bombardment by all batteries searching tracks etc East of S.O.S lines in J.26.c & d throughout the 24 hours. 3rd August 1917: Bombardment by all batteries searching tracks etc as on 2nd inst. 4th August 1917: Bombardment by all batteries searching tracks etc as on 3rd inst. 5th August 1917: Bombardment by all batteries searching tracks etc in J.26 and J.27. Our trenches heavily shelled 9.15pm. All batteries firing on S.O.S until 10.15pm. All quiet 10.30pm 6th August 1917: Bombardment by all batteries searching tracks etc as for 5th inst. ObituaryLeamington Spa Courier August 17, 1917 Gunner R.M. Prue R.F.A. son of Mr and Mrs. W Prue of 8 Garden Place, Leamington died on August 6th from wounds received in action. He joined the Army in February last [1917] and prior to that was engaged with the Singer Company of Coventry. Gunner Prue was 27 years of age. |
