Circumstances of Death

Walter is listed as being killed in action on 27 Apr 1918. The 2nd Battalion war diary makes mention of Appendix B which was a report on the operation that took place on the 20th/21st April 1918 but unfortnately it was not found in the copy held by the National Archives. The war diary entries for 20th & 21st are transcribed below.

20th April 1918 - Villers-Bretonneux: 25th Infantry Brigade relieved 14th Australian Infantry Brigade in the line on the night of 20/21st April 1918. Battalion relieved 54th Australian Infantry Battalion in the line on the night of 20/21st April and became Counter-Attack Battalion north of Villers-Bretonneux.

  • B Company 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment relieved B Company 54th Australian Battalion
  • C Company 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment relieved C Company 54th Australian Battalion
  • D Company 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment relieved D Company 54th Australian Battalio. End

21st April 1918 - Villers-Bretonneux: Battalion holding the line as above. END
