Circumstances Leading to Death

Newspaper reports and the war diary show that the 12th Battalion left Ovilliers on the 2 Nov 1918 and moved into their start positions  near Vendigies in preparation for the start of The Battle of the Sambre. On 3 Nov 1918 the war diary reports ‘a quiet day in the front line but a good deal of intermittent shelling. As William slept overnight on the 3rd a shell hit his dugout and on 4 Nov 1918 he died of wounds inflicted by the shell at the 3rd, 19th, 21st or 49th Casualty Clearing Station, all of which were based in Caudry where William was buried.

Just 7 days later the hostilities ended.
