Benjamin is listed as being killed in action on 13 Jul 1917, after originally being reported as missing in action. The 8th Battalion war diary for that day is transcribed below. Hulluch - 12th July 17: In trenches, quiet day except for aircraft activity. At night at 11.20pm 3 fighting patrols of 12 OR carried No Mans Land under cover of artillery, mortar and machine gun barrage. Two to enter German front line and one to cut out enemy port in the advances Sap. A,C & D Coys furnished these patrols. A Coy's patrol got into German front line, killed several German, brought one back and destroyed entrances to 2 Dugouts. C Coy failed to get in owning to opposition of 3 enemy M. Guns. D Coy's patrol rushed the Sap but found it unoccupied. Enemy apparantly clearing when our barrage opened. Casualties: 6 wounded, 4 OR missing. |
