Circumstances of Death

Reginald is listed as being killed in action on 12th August 1917. The 6th Division General Staff war diary entries for the 11th & 12th August are transcribed below. Reginald's obituary on the Winchester College website states that Reginald was killed while escorting a Sergeant of the US 27th Division on a visit to the front line at an advanced post near Hooge.

Douglas Camp – 11th August 1918 - 3.26am: Heavy enemy barrage extending from Kemmel to centre of right Battalion, infantry active followed unsuccessfully by attempt to retake lost ground. Prisoners taken by 41st Division belonged to 240 [German] Infantry Regiment, 52nd Reserve Division.

Divisional Commanders Conference – Present B.G.C.s 16th, 18th & 71st Brigades. OC M.G. Battalion, G.S.O I & II [Reginald] - subjects discussed – training in forward area, enemy ruses, further counter attacks.

Douglas Camp – 11th August 1918: Counter preparation in early morning. Major R.W. Barnett G.S.O II killed by enemy sniper near Vierstrat Road.
