Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day William was killed the 1st/1st were dismounted and in the front line trenches near Gillemont Farm (not to be confused with Guillemont) when they were hit by an enemy bombardment which killed 4 other ranks and sent 1 officer to hospital with shell shock. William will have been one of those killed.
