Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

On the day William was killed the 1st/1st were dismounted and in the front line trenches near Gillemont Farm (not to be confused with Guillemont) when they were hit by an enemy bombardment which killed 4 other ranks and sent 1 officer to hospital with shell shock. William will have been one of those killed.

  • William's mother Alison nee Miller died 30 Aug 1888 and we believe it was from sepsis after giving birth to William and the reason why he was given the normally female middle name of Alison.
  • In 1890 William's widowed father George married Henrietta McCulloch
  • Sometime between 1891 & 1892 the family moved to Wortley in Yorkshire
