From his service number, 9398, we can tell that Arthur joined the Army at sometime betweent the 11th January 1911 when service number 9279 joined and the 1st April 1912 when number 9478 was issued. Source - Army Service Numbers

Circumstances of Death

Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 14 Mar 1915. The very brief 2nd Battalion war diary entry is transcribed below.

14-3-1915 Rouge Croix: The Battalion remained in billets [at Rouge Croix] till 6pm. The billets were again heavily shelled. At 7pm the battalion again paraded for the trenches.

Strength 1 Officer and 181 other ranks. The Machine Gun section came into the trench late at night the same day. END
