Arthur is listed as being killed in action on 13th April 1916 near Hohenzollern Redoubt. The 9th Battalion war diary entries for the period 12th to 14th April are transcribed below. Please note that the writing is very faded and difficult to read. Hohenzollern Redoubt - 12 Apr 1916: Enemy shelled our trench with minewerfers, our artillery retaliated. An unexploded shell fell in Hussar Horn during the morning. It was removed by an officer of the R.F.A who stated it to be a 5.9 shell. At 1.40pm? the enemy exploded a mine 450 yards taken from Junction of Saville Row – Naiserin Trench, estimated distance about 80 yards fair sized trench was formed which the enemy occupied. There was no firing and enemy front line slightly damaged. No damage to our Saps. CSM Williams A Coy died late at night from concussions received at mine explosions was buried at 33rd CCS Bethune. Hohenzollern Redoubt - 13 Apr 1916: At 6.30pm we exploded 3 mines in the Hohenzollern Redoubt and then bombarded the enemy trenches. The enemy retaliated on Hussar Horn & Sigu? Street but did very little damage. Our snipers were active & claimed several victims and periscopes. Hohenzollern Redoubt - 14 Apr 1916: Day exceptionally quiet. A Coy smashed 2 enemy loophole plates with elephant gun. Our snipers were active. |
