William is listed as being killed in action on 23rd March 1918. The 1st Battalion war diary entries for the period 22nd to 24th March are transcribed below.

Havrincourt Wood – 22 Mar 1918: Bn ordered to evacuate & proceed to Old British Line in Havrincourt Wood. Shortly before evacuation Lt. Col MC.J. Farquharsion MC commanding 2nd Bn R.M.L.I wounded in Brown Line.

Havrincourt Wood – 23 Mar 1918: Battn proceeding to prepared line in Bertincourt & took up position in Front Line on the left of 2nd Bn R.M.L.I.

During the afternoon enemy heavily shelled the right Battn.

Bertincourt Wood – 24 Mar 1918: Bn ordered to withdraw from Bertincourt & proceed ti Bapaume – Peronne Road & thence to Martinpuich.
