Circumstances Leading to Death (Normally from War Diary)

The war diary states that the Battalion was based at Mason's Mounds, which were on the banks of the River Tigris, and there was a severe outbreak of illness that was hospitalising a lot of men on a daily basis. An account from an officer of the Hampshire Regiment who were also stationed Masons Mounds suggests that the illness was Gastro-Enteritis. There was no reported fighting for the whole month of June and it is assumed that John died of illness, most likely Gastro-Enteritis.
