Circumstances of Death

John is listed as being killed in action on 25th March 1918. The 13th Battalion war diary entries for the period 23rd to 26 March 1918 are transcribed below.

Perrone - 23 Mar 1918: Battalion ordered to evacuate Green Line to take up position about 3 miles E of Perrone to cover withdrawal of 117^th & 118^th Brigades. Owing to orders to evacuate failing to reach Bn, enemy got around both flanks & it was necessary to fall back on Peronne instead of NW as ordered. Retreat successfully accomplished through Peronne bridges held until blown up by Sappers. During this day the Battalion again suffered heavy casualties.

Peronne - 24/25 Mar 1918: Remnants of Battalion incorporated in composite Bn ordersof G.O.C 6^th Division and fought with them defending canal.

Canal - 26 Mar 1918: Rejoined 116^th Brigade & defended Chignes during retirement of 117^th & 118^th Brigades.
