Circumstances of Death

Frederick is listed as being killed in action on 27th August 1918. The 13th Battalion war diary entries for the period 24th to 28th August are transcribed below.

Mesnil - 24 Aug 1918: Brigade advanced across the Ancre [River]. Many prisoners taken by us. Bde HQ in Mesnil

Mesnil - 25 Aug 1918: Brigade HQ crossed the Ancre and proceeded to Pozieres

Pozieres - 26 Aug 1918: Battalion still split up, pause in advance. At 8.30pm Battalion reformed.

High Wood – 27 Aug 1918: Battalion under Lt. Col Kennedy DSO MC assembled at 4.30am for the attack forward of High Wood. Although originally support, battalion eventually found themselves leading and did splendid work. Enemy casualties were heavy and a fair number of prisoners were taken.

Our officer casualties were 2/Lt Leach killed, Capt. Forster MC; 2/Lts St. John; Morris; Jones wounded.

High Wood – 28 Aug 1918: Battalion paused in the line before Flers and Delville Wood and reorganised. At night withdrew.
