Our database is created from the Transcriptions of WW1 War Memorials, Plaque and Rolls of Honour containing the names of the men and women of the SWFHS area who fell in WW1. By no means yet complete the database now contains the records of 1294 men who fell in WW1 and we continue to add to it. Today, 14 Sep 2022, we added the details of a further 34 men who are named on the Stratford on Avon War Memorial situated in Memorial Park, Stratford as well as Holy Trinity Church. We are now researching the men named on the remaining 3 panels of the Memorial from Ryman to Wright as well as a supplemental panel.

The information collected is ofter wide ranging and includes details of their Military Service, details of how, when, where and why they died along with personal and family history details. In due course we will be adding photographs and documents to the database. This is a long term project which will take another couple of years to complete at current pace and we do update the website when we add new data. Gaps in the data mean that we have yet to find that info. Click the last name for more details of the soldier. At the moment the database is only searchable by one field so we suggest either selecting All in the number of records for display then clicking the column header Last and then scroll down or search by last name. We have used a large number of sources to make sure that our records are as accurate as possible and in many cases we have discovered previously unpublished details. Our thanks to Kenneth Fowler and his book The County of Warwickshire Roll of Honour Vol 1, as well as the National Archives for making War Diaries free to download (contact us for any specific entry you might want), Ancestry.co.uk; Find My Past; Wikipedia; The Long Long Trail website for its excellent lists of location and not least the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Do you have photographs, documents or information about any of the men and women of South Warwickshire?, if you do we would be happy to received and publish them. Use our upload form by clicking here.

Today we added a further batch of 1,450 of the hard to find Non-Conformist Baptism records including:

Birmingham Carr Street
Coventry Warwick Street
Coventry Smithford Street
Stretton-under-Fosse
Ullesthorpe. We also added the period 1914 to 1916 to the Atherstone St. Mary CofE baptisms database.

Over the past couple of weeks we have uploaded the full details of another 1000 boys who were interred at Saltley Reformatory. The records carefully transacribed by Fred Miller over a number of years are a truly fascinating record of what life was like for younger people in Victorian times and detail punishments that could never happen today including imprisonment, the birch and the Reformatory for such minor offenses as stealing a game bird.

The records detail some very sad circumstances from one 10 yr old whose father had disappeared, whose mother was an alcoholic and he had lost a leg in an accident. On the other hand the records detail what appear to be successful rehablitation of boys who had previously lived in dire circumstances but went onto to live a fruitful life, many of them in Canada or Australasia. Although based in South Warwickshire the school inmates came from all over the country.

Do you have relatives who seem to have disappeared between census?, perhaps they were in Saltley - search for them by clicking here.

Over the last few days we have added a further batch of 33,000 Church of England Baptism index records for:

Stratford on Avon (1886-1901)
Wolfhampcote (the old gap btwn 1614-1752 is now filled).

We are now in the process of adding further records to the Saltley Reform School database.
